Amatis Piano Trio - Beethoven, Mendelssohn, Shostakovich - Engaging Romanticism

Pianotrio in Bes, op. 11, 'Gassenhauer'
Amatis Piano Trio
  • I. Allegro con brio
  • II. Adagio
  • III. Tema con variazioni
Beethoven's 'Gassenhauertrio' owes its popularity to the tempestuous finale. In it Beethoven treats his audience to a series of imaginative variations on an aria from Joseph Weigl's opera L'amor marinaro. This aria was an absolute top hit and was whistled by almost everyone in the streets (the gasses) of Vienna. This piano trio also owes its nickname to this.
Pianotrio nr. 1 in c, op. 8
Amatis Piano Trio
The sixteen-year-old Shostakovich wrote his First Piano Trio on the coast of the Black Sea, where he recovered from tuberculosis. As he recovered, he became increasingly interested in the beautiful Tatyana Glivenko, who was also there on holiday. Shostakovich fell in love with Shostakovich and composed his First Piano Trio. "It's dedicated to you, if you don't mind," he shyly wrote to Tatyana. Although they kept in touch, it remained a sweltering holiday love.

Elelgie, op. 23
Amatis Piano Trio
The important Czech poet Julius Zeyer died in 1901. On the occasion of the first anniversary of his death, Josef Suk composed his Elegy. The piece was performed during the official memorial service. At the same time, Suk paid homage to his father-in-law Antonín Dvorák in his Elegy by recording a quote from Dvorák's recently completed opera Rusalka
Pianotrio nr. 1 in d, op. 49
Amatis Piano Trio
  • I. Molto allegro ed agitato
  • II. Andante con moto tranquillo
  • III. Scherzo. Leggiero e vivace
  • VI. Finale. Allegro assai appassionato
Anyone who has heard Mendelssohn's famous Ouverture Ein Sommernachtstraum will recognize a lot in the 'Scherzo' of this beautiful piano trio. The fairytale atmosphere, one of Mendelssohn's trademarks, can be heard throughout the 'Scherzo'.
